PROMOTION PERIOD

ENTRY
Eligible users can enter the Promotion during the Promotion Period in one of the following ways:
* In-Game Entry. Players may be eligible to receive one entry for each Daily Challenge they complete and ten additional entries for completing all Daily Challenges. Players may be eligible to receive 3 entries per Hot Streak Challenge they complete and one hundred additional entries for completing all Hot Streak Challenges during the Promotion Period. Players may be eligible to receive 20 entries per Weekly Challenge they complete each week. Players may earn a maximum number of 2,000 entries during the Promotion Period.

SEMI-FINALIST DRAWING AND NOTIFICATION
If there are sufficient eligible entries, on or around October 1, 2019, twenty five (25) semi-finalists will be drawn at random from among all eligible entries received. Semi-finalists will be notified of their semi-finalist status and of next steps via email at their Facebook-connected email address or other email address provided. If Zynga determines in its sole discretion that an insufficient number of semifinalists have responded and/or made video submissions as directed in order for appropriate Grand Prize winners to be selected, alternate or additional semi-finalists may be selected by random drawing from among all remaining eligible entries.
SEMI-FINALIST VIDEO SUBMISSION AND ENTRY FOR GRAND PRIZE CONSIDERATION
To be eligible for consideration for the Grand Prize, per the instructions provided in the semi-finalist notification message, each semi-finalist must submit an original audition video of up to one minute in length depicting why the semi-finalist should be chosen to play in the Celebrity Home Game. Videos must be submitted by October 6, 2019 in accordance with the instructions set forth in the semi-finalist notification message.
Eligible videos must meet the following requirements:
*Videos must be original;
*Videos must not include non-Zynga brands, logos, copyrighted or trademark-protected content, or content that infringes any third party’s publicity rights;
*Video must not include religious references or symbols;
*Video must not include content that is obscene, pornographic, libelous or otherwise objectionable (including, without limitation, profanity or offensive language) as determined by Zynga in its sole discretion.
By submitting your entry, you give Zynga a perpetual and irrevocable (other than as provided below), worldwide, fully paid-up and royalty free, non-exclusive, license to use your entry and any modified and derivative works thereof (the “User Content”) for any purpose, including in marketing and promotions. To the extent allowed by applicable laws, you waive any moral rights you may have in any User Content (like the right to be identified as the author of the User Content or the right to object to a certain use of that User Content). JUDGING AND NOTIFICATION OF GRAND PRIZE WINNER(S)
On or around October 14, 2019, two (2) eligible semifinalist video submission entries will be selected by the Zynga Poker Promotion Committee, consisting of Brad Garrett and select Zynga employees. Judging of semifinalist video entries will be based on creativity, originality, and fit with the Zynga Poker brand.
If there are sufficient eligible entries, there will be a total of two (2) winners following the end of the Promotion Period. Odds of winning depend on the number of eligible entries received. Zynga anticipates that winners will be notified via email or telephone.
The potential Grand Prize winners will be required to provide certain additional information and execute certain additional forms, including a declaration of eligibility, non-disclosure agreement, and a release of liability and publicity, within two (2) days of notification. Failure to respond with such information and fully-executed forms within the two (2) day period will indicate definitively that the Grand Prize has been declined and an alternative winner will be selected. GRAND PRIZE DETAILS
*Two (2) Grand Prize winners will win a trip to Malibu, California from October 25-27, 2019, to play in the Zynga Poker Celebrity Home Game (the “Grand Prize”). Each Grand Prize winner will receive: ground transport and/or round-trip, coach-class air transportation for the winner from a major airport near the winner’s home (as determined by Zynga in its sole discretion) to Malibu, California; two (2) nights’ accommodation at a hotel of Zynga’s choosing; a $200.00 meal credit; and the opportunity to play in the Zynga Poker Celebrity Home Game. NL Hold’em Starting Hand Charts
For your reference we have organized poker hands by strength so that you are never wondering who is the winner of any poker hand at the table. Note that the poker games Pot Limit Omaha and Texas Hold’em both share the same hand rankings format. Poker Hand Rankings Guide. Does a straight beat a flush? Does 2 pair beat a set?
One aspect of the game of No-Limit Hold’em that causes beginning players much grief is deciding which hands to play and which hands to dump. NL Hold’em is much more difficult than Limit Hold’em because the value of a hand depends on so many factors other than just the cards in your hand. Despite this difficulty, our coaches believe that following some general guidelines and adjusting from these is a better solution than having no guidelines at all. Given that well over half of your profitability in NL Hold’em is based on hand selection alone, we have developed these charts to help you better determine whether to play or fold.
There are no perfect No-Limit starting hand charts. That is because there are many factors that affect your decision, and charts cannot account for all of them. Some of these include:
*The size of your opponent’s stacks.
*How loose or tight, passive or aggressive, your opponents are.
*Where these opponents are located at the table – for example, does an aggressive player still have to act after you?
*Your image at the table – for example, how tight or tricky you are perceived.
The Top 24 Hold’Em Starting Hand Rankings. To help you out, I have also included the top 24 no-limit hold’em starting hands to give you a further idea of what beats what in poker. I based this list on both raw equities as well as post-flop playability. I have used over 10 years of experience in both tournaments and cash games to compile. Can you have 3 pairs in poker? There is no “3 pair” hand rank in poker. When playing Texas Hold’em it’s technically possible to have three pairs, but since a poker hand only consists of 5 cards only the 2 highest pairs are in play. For example, if you hold Q-J and the board reads Q-J-6-A-A you only have two pair: Aces and Queens. Poker Hand Rankings - Texas Holdem Starting Hands Chart. At the bottom of this page is a comprehensive listing of Texas Hold’em starting hands based on their EV (expected value). Expected value is the average number of big blinds this hand will make or lose.
That being said, these charts will serve you well in most typical low-stakes No-Limit cash games, such as games with blinds of $1/$2, and home games. These games typically have several loose players at the table, and good opportunities for winning big pots with suited connectors and pocket pairs. With practice, you will be able to be a consistently winning player with these charts as a starting point. As you improve, you’ll find yourself making adjustments to these charts based on the factors listed above, and more.
AGAIN: These charts are a good starting point for beginners. Specifically, Chart #1 recommends a significant amount of limping. This is great in loose, passive games but less often seen in tougher games. You’ll find other training material on Advanced Poker Training that may recommend a more aggressive approach for more experienced players.
Note: It would be a serious mistake to apply these hand charts before reading the Frequent Asked Questions first.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
For the hands in yellow, what do you mean when you say to play these hands if the conditions are right? The hands in yellow are speculative hands. They should always be folded from Early Position. From other positions, they can be profitable given the right conditions. Some of the questions to ask yourself:
*Are there other players who have called so far (the more, the better)?
*Are the players who have called playing poorly after the flop? Will they pay me off if I hit something?
*Is there an aggressive player still to act behind me (you might get raised and have to fold)?
*If there has been a raise and no other callers, what chance do I have of using my position after the flop to win the hand even if I don’t improve (Chart #3 only)?
Why does Chart #2 say to sometimes raise with the hands in yellow, but Chart #1 does not? We have different goals in mind. Using Chart #1, we want to call to encourage additional players to enter the pot. These hands will be immensely profitable when our loose, passive opponents enter the hand, and get trapped when we flop a set, or make a well-disguised straight. When using Chart #2, however, we want to size up the opponents still to act. If they are tight, we can raise. Sometimes, we’ll pick up the blinds. Other times, our pre-flop aggression will allow us to take down the pot on the flop.
What’s the difference between AKs and AKo? AKs means an Ace and King of the same suit. AKo means an Ace and King of different suits.
What are early, middle, and late position? Early Position is generally the first 2 (in a nine player game) or 3 (in a ten player game) positions after the blinds. Late Position is the “cutoff” position (to the right of the dealer), and dealer button positions. Middle Position is everything in between.
How much should I raise? As a general rule, raise 3 to 4 times the big blind, plus 1 extra big blind for every player who has called before you. So if there are 2 callers already, raise between 5 and 6 times the big blind.
What if someone raises after I call? Whether you call the raise depends on how much money the raiser has for you to win, how many other players are involved, and what type of hand you have. As a general rule, if you have a pocket pair, lean towards calling. If there are a lot of other players (and therefore a big pot), lean towards calling. In general, fold suited connectors from early position. Fold hands like KQ that don’t play well against a raiser.
How do I play from the blinds? From the small blind, play the same hands you would play from late position, plus a few more. But don’t call with junk hands like T5o, just because it is “cheap”. From the big blind, if there is a raise to you, play like you would if you had already called from early position.
The chart says to fold KQo to a raise. Really? Yes, this hand performs very poorly against typical raising hands. Against AK, AQ, AA, KK, QQ, you are a big underdog. Other typical raising hands like JJ, TT, 99, AJs, are slightly ahead of you as well. Gorilla slot machine free. The only time you might call or re-raise is from late position, if the opener was in middle or late position, indicating they might have a wider range of hands.
I was told to fold AJo from Early Position, why do you say to call with it? Folding AJo is not a bad idea in many games. We included it because, at low stakes tables (even tight or aggressive ones), the players are often playing badly enough after the flop that it can be profitable. We used data from millions of hands of low-limit poker to analyze this. The same could be said for KQo, ATs, and KJs – you can make a small profit in the long run at most low-stakes games, but folding would be perfectly acceptable from early position.
Can I use these charts in a NL Hold’em tournament? The charts would be best applicable to the early stages of a NL tournament, when everyone has a deep stack. In the middle and later stages, they should not be used.

I have roamed many of the local cemeteries. The Schoolcraft in Calumet being one of them. One tombstone really got to me, a beautiful white marble one. The subject being cemeteries I must tell you about what I found on the genealogy site in Finland. There are some people who have undertaken the task of photographing the gravestones in a few communities. One of them happened to be from Eräjärvi, my fathers hometown.

On one visit, I left my truck and Yanni CD playing as I made a quick visit, and upon returning to the truck, a song called ’One Man’s Dream’ was playing. In a blog post entitled ‘What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas [NOT]’, Yong recounts the aftermath of the match which saw Kirk win $3million from Tsoukernik, which the Australian followed up by raising a legal action claiming the Czech high-roller was refusing to pay his debts.


‘Articles referencing my involvement in brokering a deal between Matt Kirk and Leon Tsoukernik have some inaccuracies, so I will tell the poker community the stone cold facts,’ wrote Yong, two days after Tsoukernik launched a counterclaim in a Nevada court, seeking more than $10million in damages and naming the Aria Casino as a third party litigant.
‘I was sound asleep when the Leon Matty game happened,’ Yong states, having himself been playing in the Ivey Room at the Aria until the early hours of May 27th this year, but later that morning he says ‘Matty came over and told me that he had won $3M heads-up off Leon last night and was worried about being paid.’
Kirk then explained to Yong that he ‘didn’t want to hit and run Leon’ and was ‘heavily pressured by Leon to continue’ after the Czech casino mogul got extremely drunk, Tsoukernik blaming staff at the Aria for his condition and claiming that their role in the match rendered the ‘unfair, dishonest and non-competitive’.



What is not in dispute is the fact that Kirk loaned Tsoukernik $3m, although Yong ‘didn’t understand why Leon would loan (sic: borrow) money to play’ as he had ‘$4M + on deposit from roulette winnings’.

Yong continued: ‘Matty asked me what he should do. I replied, ‘I am sure Leon will pay you in full but if you feel a bit bad, and want to give him a small discount as a goodwill gesture that would also be okay’. Matty asked me what discount. I replied after some consideration, ‘Maybe $2M cash and play heads-up for the $1M.’
Backing up Tsoukernik’s claim this week that Kirk agreed to a settlement deal, Yong says: ‘Matty agreed and asked me to propose this settlement to Leon. Matty wanted to settle today before playing Leon again as this was a large sum of money.’
According to Yong, Tsoukernik told him: ‘Tell Matty not to worry, I don’t remember much but whatever I lost I will pay today’ and when Yong explained the offer Leon replied ‘fine, whatever Matty wants’.’ Yong adds that he ‘shouted Matty over and Leon and Matty hugged and shook hands on this $2M + $1M heads up deal.’
The story gets really interesting at this point, touching on something which Tsoukernik has mentioned several times in his legal counter-claim – namely that someone was behind Kirk’s bankroll and his decision to renege on the deal Yong claims to have brokered.

Yong says that: ‘20 minutes later Matty called me over … he was on the phone to someone. Matty told me ‘There is no deal, Leon has to pay the full $3M’. I asked why and he told me the person on the phone has said ‘no deal’ and it was ‘out of his hands’.
Tsoukernik apparently was enraged at this turn of events, telling Yong: ‘This is ridiculous, you get me out of bed after 2 hours sleep, I don’t remember anything but I agree to everything, I even offer to get the money brought here now, I shake hands and now you tell me this!’
Writing, ‘I was wishing I had never got involved: Leon was happy to pay the $3M, Matty was a total gentlemen offering Leon a discount, and somehow this had all gone wrong. I will never get a job in politics’, Yong returned to the UK, but was called a few days later.
‘My phone rang and it was Leon and Matty on speakerphone. Leon said ‘Myself and Matt are here at the Rio Cage, we have agreed a settlement and we would like you to be a witness to it. I am giving Matt $1M and he accepts this as a full and final settlement for the game.’
A surprised Yong replied: ’Eh, $1M, are you serious! Matty, WTF’ but Kirk assured him, ‘Yes, it’s fine, we are all settled, I want to move on’.
‘I couldn’t believe what I was hearing, but at the end of the day, they just wanted me to witness the settlement and I was sick of being involved so I just said ‘fine, I have witnessed it’, says Yong.


Later that same night the Australian Skyped Yong and was ‘absolutely fuming’, telling the Dusk Til Dawn man ‘he didn’t care about the money now and he was going to use the $1M to ruin Leon’s reputation in the poker world’ - furious with Leon who apparently told him: ‘This is a lesson for you, you shouldn’t loan money to drunk people’.Matt Kirk Poker Player
After Leon’s own legal claims were made public, Yong says he messaged Kirk who ‘told me his lawyer had told him that he could no longer speak to me.’

In closing his blog revelations, Yong states of his role: Matt Kirk Poker Hendon‘I have sought advice from close friends in the poker world whose opinions I respect. I am comfortable with the advice that I gave Matty at Liquid and have confirmation from persons present in Ivey’s Room that Leon’s condition had deteriorated to such an extent that at one point he folded the winning hand, however I was not present while the game took place so all I could do was suggest a solution based on the facts presented to me with no bias towards either party and I would be happy to appear in court in Nevada and repeat this word for word under oath on behalf of either Matt’s or Leon’s attorney.’

Then the Islandia Marriott came on the market. It had been the Islandia Marriott Long Island, at 10 stories with 227 rooms, a huge hotel for Suffolk. It was purchased by Delaware North, which describes itself as a “global hospitality and food service company” and will be running it with the Suffolk OTB.
Jake’s 58 gets its name from the nearest LIE exit, 58, and the Jacobs family, owner of Buffalo-based Delaware North.
It is a high-stakes gamble for Suffolk OTB.
As Newsday’s article was headlined last month, “Suffolk OTB counts on a casino in Islandia to counter bankruptcy.” Indeed, Suffolk OTB officials are hoping the casino will generate $2 billion in gross revenue a year. That would get Suffolk OTB out of bankruptcy, which it first filed for in 2011.
“Suffolk County OTB executives say Long Island’s first video lottery casino is the agency’s last ditch effort to emerge from bankruptcy and save itself — if the Islandia betting parlor can meet projected revenues,” Newsday reported.
Suffolk OTB — indeed gambling in general in the U.S. — has hit hard times in recent decades. Much of this has to do with what is termed the “casino-saturation problem.” In 1978, only Nevada and New Jersey had commercial casinos. Today, they are in 24 states. Gambling on the Internet has grown as well.
Atlantic City was for a time the gambling mecca of the Northeast. But now nearly every state in the region has casinos. As for Atlantic City, which had a dozen huge casinos, now that’s down to seven with the latest one closing last year, Trump Taj Mahal.
Jake’s 58, meanwhile, is not exactly a traditional casino. It is limited to video slot machines — 265 of them now and an expected 1,000 by this summer. They are electronic versions of casino games. Suffolk OTB plans to ask for the state’s OK to add an additional 1,000. But this set-up might be fine for Long Islanders seeking to avoid a drive to Atlantic City or Connecticut to bet in their casinos, or a trip upstate.
How Suffolk County got a casino is an odd story.
In 2014, New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo sought to “reform” the Long Island Power Authority and bring in a New Jersey-based company, PSEG, to be the main utility on the island.But this was opposed by the island’s state legislators from both parties.
According to sources in Albany, Cuomo pushed a deal, taken to legislators by his then-top aide, former Deputy Suffolk County Executive Larry Schwartz. Under it, to aid Nassau and Suffolk’s financially-strapped county governments, they would get the governor’s go-ahead to set up facilities for video slot machines — in return for the lawmakers supporting his “reform” scheme. More than half then went for it.Originally, Cuomo had sought to locate new casinos only in economically depressed areas upstate.
In the end, intense public opposition in Nassau County stopped the proposed casino there, but an arrangement was made under which Nassau would receive revenue from a video slot operation in Queens.
Suffolk OTB, in sharp decline, earlier had closed 10 of its 14 gambling locations and sold its Hauppauge headquarters. Suffolk OTB officials say a central location in the county was the preferred site all along, rather than Medford. And the use of what had been the Islandia Marriott avoids the need for a new facility — the hotel could be modified to become a casino.
Suffolk County government is to receive at least $2 million in the first year, $3 million in the second and then $1 million for each of the next eight years.
The small Village of Islandia, created in 1985, has been promised $47 million over 20 years by Delaware North, enough to cut village property taxes by about half for its 3,335 residents, says the village’s mayor, Allan M. Dorman, a big booster of the casino.
But there is a lawsuit pending brought by some area residents seeking to close the Islandia operation. It alleges the village’s approval was fraught with illegalities. They further complain the casino will lead to crime, increased traffic and lower property values.
Opponents of state-sponsored gambling have also long charged that it hits low-wage earners the hardest, causing debt, broken families and other personal tragedies — that gambling is often addictive and government shouldn’t encourage it.
Years ago I researched and wrote an article on the Gamblers Anonymous group. Members spoke of the thrill of gambling — as opposed to betting — the difference being, they explained, they couldn’t afford to lose the money when gambling, and this danger caused a certain “high.”
They spoke of losing jobs and relationships and becoming hooked on what became a compulsion.
Gamblers Anonymous remains active on Long Island, and with a new casino here can be expected to be yet more active.

We are all born in original sin, meaning the status quo of even the cutest baby on earth before baptism has natural goodness but no supernatural goodness. Still, God has a plan of a supernatural beatitude planned for that baby in heaven in both body and soul. Because transmitted original sin separates us all from God, it would take a great sacrifice of a God-man to reconcile any person born in sin: God, because only a pure and blameless and boundless sacrifice can appease an infinite offense against an infinitely good God. Man, because a sacrifice of man is needed since “without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins.”—Hb 9:22. Thus, the only thing that can reconcile us sinners to God is a God-man, Jesus Christ on His cross. The merits of His Passion, Death and Resurrection are communicated first by baptism (1 Pt 3:21) and later confession of actual sins to a priest (Jn 20:22-23.)

If we have the grace of being baptized as babies or even as adults, then we have gained what is called “sanctifying grace.” The only way a Catholic can lose sanctifying grace is by committing a mortal sin. Every Catholic on the planet is either in sanctifying grace or mortal sin. There is no grey area in this matter. It’s extremely black and white: Again, every baptized Catholic on the planet is either in sanctifying grace or mortal sin. Those who die in sanctifying grace go to heaven, or heaven via Purgatory. Those who die in mortal sin go to hell. There are many sins like murder or child-abuse that most Catholics know are mortal sins. But the Popes and saints and Bible and Magisterium are Divine Revelation that make it very clear that most modern Catholics are missing some major mortal sins in their confessions. I have listed below the 15 most commonly “missed” mortal sins, not necessarily in order of gravity. I start with the sexual sins not because they are the most flashy, but simply to get them out of the way first. (I actually hate writing blog posts like this, but I care for so many lost Catholics.)
What is a venial sin and a mortal sin? 1 John 5 delineates between venial and mortal sin: “All iniquity is sin. And there is a sin unto death.”—1 Jn 5:17. A venial sin is a smaller sin that can be relieved by asking God’s forgiveness and saying an Our Father (similar to the means by which Protestants claim we are freed from sins in general, as they make no distinction between venial and mortal sins, even though it is explicit in Scripture!). A mortal sin, however, kicks the Blessed Trinity out of our soul and the only way to regain Jesus’ friendship is through confession to a priest (Jn 20:23). What constitutes a mortal sin? First, grave deeds, but “besides grave matter, there is also required full consciousness of the gravity of the matter, along with the deliberate will to commit the sin.”—Catechism of Saint Pius X . Now, most of the emphasis over the past 50-70 years has been put on the subjective two parts of that above definition. But even the new Catechism of the Catholic Church says of vincible (lazy) ignorance that “this ignorance can often be imputed to personal responsibility. This is the case when a man ‘takes little trouble to find out what is true and good, or when conscience is by degrees almost blinded through the habit of committing sin.’ In such cases, the person is culpable for the evil he commits.”—CCC 1790-1791. In other words, if you’re reading this blog post, you’re responsible for knowing the below 15 sins. Even if you stop reading now, you’re still responsible before God.
The good news, however, is that with a General Confession (a lifetime confession) of all your sins, you will leave the confessional as clean and as strong as a baby on the day of its baptism. And you will feel it—immediately. The one thing greater than your ability to sin is your Heavenly Father’s ability to forgive you, so I promise you that God is powerful enough to forgive even the most serious or the most embarrassing sins that you confess. We priests have heard them all, so it’s impossible to shock us. We will not be mean to you. Confession might seem hard, but think of the trade off: You trade 10 minutes of embarrassment for an eternity in hell that Jesus paid by being tortured for 17 hours for you from the Garden to Caipahas’ house to the scourging to the Cross. The merits of His death for you are communicated by baptism and confession. That is the trade off: that Jesus Christ paid the penalty of all the below sins. Such is his infinite mercy. So, just confess the below sins to a solid priest (namely, who will respect your conscience) because you will feel the weight of the world off your shoulders. Just believe the Church saints and doctors who I quote below on what is mortal versus venial sin. If you have any of the following sins on your heart, you need to confess them (with number, even if estimated) to avoid the fires of hell and the eternal loss of God.Part II: 15 Mortal Sins Catholics Are Frequently Missing in Their Confessions
1. Contraception, IVF and Abortion. Most readers here know that abortion is murder. But many Catholics do not know that contraception (in marriage or out of marriage) is a mortal sin. Both sterilization (of the man or woman) and/or the condom (male or female) is a mortal sin. These must be confessed to enter sanctifying grace. But there is a worse contraceptive sin than even the condom or sterilization within marriage: Many Catholics do not know that the Oral Contraceptive and the IUD function half the time as a contraceptive and half the time as an abortifacient. I explained the medicine of that in this podcast here. This means that Catholic women on the Pill (and the men who sleep with them) should confess their sorrow not only for the mortal sin of contraception in marriage, but also having killed any of their own children through the use of the Pill, the shot or the birth-control implant in the arm. All of these OCs are chemically wired to first stop ovulation and then, as a back-up, to slough off the inner-lining of the uterus to eject newly formed individuals (your children!) into the toilet. As most readers know, IVF requires you to sacrifice about 20 of your own children via both “embryo reduction” and “freezing” to get about two of them born. Thus, IVF is literally murdering and freezing many of your children to get a few born for yourself. River rock casino opening date. God can quickly forgive the murder of children. If even a priest as intense as me will not scream at anyone in the confessional for this sin, then neither will any priest out there. Just confess it, even if you didn’t know it.

2. Masturbation and/or Pornography, before marriage or within marriage. Some saints have pointed out that sins which exacted physical death in the Old Covenant (Judaism) are frequently the sins that cause spiritual death in the New Testament (Catholicism.) God directly only kills a few people in the Old Testament, and Onan is one of them: “But Onan knew that the offspring would not be his. So whenever he went in to his brother’s wife he would waste the semen on the ground, so as not to give offspring to his brother. And what he did was wicked in the sight of the Lord, and He put him to death also.”—Gen 38:9-10. Thus, sterilization and masturbation and the use of the condom is a mortal sin even when no pornography is used. How about pornography without masturbation? This too is a mortal sin since Jesus said “But I say to you, that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart.”—Mt 5:28.” In this vein, simply lusting after a woman or a man on the street can be mortal sin! But thankfully St. Francis De Sales (a doctor of the Church) gives us some parameters to know if we consented to such temptations: 1
3. Immodesty, Including Wearing Leggings and Short Shorts. I could quote countless saints here, but the most succinct description is what the Mother of God said at Fatima: “Certain fashions will be introduced that will offend Our Lord very much.”—Our Lady of Fatima, 1917. What are these certain fashions? If not leggings and short shorts, then what? Strangely, many Catholic women know this quote from Fatima, but they only apply it to women who wear less than themselves. Ladies, when you hear that quote from Our Lady of Fatima that certain fashions will lead you (and the men who look at you) to hell, are you imagining some imaginary time in the year 3022 when some fashion gets worse than leggings and short shorts? What could be more revealing than something that shows every nook and cranny below your waist? What would this magical outfit be that could be worse than that? There is nothing. Rather, let me assure you: The Mother of God very much meant that short shorts, leggings and bikinis will lead you to hell, including letting your little girls wear leggings. If you wear these things to Mass, you should also confess sacrilege. Or, if you don’t believe my interpretation of Mary’s words, then go for it. Wear it and let your daughters prance around Target in short-shorts and leggings. But might I suggest Pascal’s wager for this one: If your parish priest is right and Fr. Nix is wrong on his interpretation of Fatima, then the most you have lost is a little “comfort” in avoiding leggings for believing me in an erroneous state. But if Fr. Nix is correct in his interpretation (that Mary meant nothing worse than leggings and short-shorts) then just meditate on your first 15 seconds in hell. As Fr. Z says, just meditate on your first 15 seconds in hell. Meditate on that 7000 degree furnace for fifteen seconds and the realization that you just lost God forever because you thought leggings (again, that showed every nook and cranny of your nether-regions to every man around you) led you and countless men to hell for the sake of “comfort.” Am I using fear of hell to get you to stop wearing leggings and short shorts? Hell yes, I am.
4 Before marriage, making-out or anything more passionate than that. St. Thomas Aquinas writes: “I answer that a thing is said to be a mortal works. One may sin in two ways. First, by reason of its species, and in this way a kiss, caress, or touch does not, of its very nature, imply a mortal sin, for it is possible to do such things without lustful pleasure, either as being the custom of one’s country, or on account of some obligation or reasonable cause. Secondly, a thing is said to be a mortal sin by reason of its cause: thus he who gives an alms, in order to lead someone into heresy, sins mortally on account of his corrupt intention. Now it has been stated above (FS, Q[74], A[8]), that it is a mortal sin not only to consent to the act, but also to the delectation of a mortal sin. Wherefore since fornication is a mortal sin, and much more so the other kinds of lust, it follows that in such like sins not only consent to the act but also consent to the pleasure is a mortal sin. Consequently, when these kisses and caresses are done for this delectation, it follows that they are mortal sins, and only in this way are they said to be lustful. Therefore in so far as they are lustful, they are mortal sins…”—ST II.II.154.4 c
5. In marriage, anything unnatural. The two greatest moral theologians of the Church, St. Thomas Aquinas and St. Alphonsus Ligouri both teach that anal sex and oral sex in marriage is a mortal sin. If you confess this sin, expect many parish priests to say, “it’s not a sin.” Then, you will say, “But St. Thomas Aquinas and St. Alphonsus Liguori both say it’s a mortal sin.” Then, your parish priest will probably say: “But they’re not infallible.” This reveals his total lack of understanding of Divine Revelation – that so much more than ex-cathedra statements are infallible in the Catholic Church. I don’t have time to re-vamp every priest’s six years in a single blog post on mortal sins and how hundreds of Popes agree with those two saints, so please just go to a traditional priest who knows this…or…pull out a modernist priest’s favorite line: “Please just respect my conscience in confessing this!” 2
6. Homosexual Acts. All sexual sins (heterosexual or homosexual) are mortal sins if committed with consent. But homosexual sins are not only under the category of mortal, but under the category of mortal PLUS sins that are said to cry to God for vengeance. This means that sodomy is one of the four worst mortal sins you can commit. There is nothing wrong with same-gender friendship, but ramming a penis in an anus is filthy and evil and violent. That is what sodomy is. I know there are some priests out there committing sodomy, and other priests out there not committing sodomy but celebrating those who do commit sodomy. Let me be very blunt for the sake of your soul: If you are committing homosexual sins and do not repent, confess them and try your best to stop, you will go to hell forever. I’m sorry to be blunt, but I say this because I love you, and I really believe God can forgive everyone’s sins. Everyone knows God is merciful, but He is also powerful enough to forgive such filthy sins and make you clean again. Just listen to my friend Joseph Sciambra in our interview here or here.
7. Chronic failure to catechize your kids. Many good mothers and fathers occasionally miss some catechetical lessons for their kids, and that is not a big deal. That is why I say it’s only a mortal sin if you had a chronic (lifetime) failure to catechize your children. So, if you fail to learn the Catholic faith and fail to teach it to your children (and I don’t mean to just Sunday Mass, I mean the fullness of the Catholic faith) then this is a mortal sin. This is especially directed at biological fathers and priests, as you are called to be the main catechizers of your families and flocks. Look, none of this is legalism. It all comes down to love: “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.”—Jn 14:15. How can your children know Jesus if you don’t teach them how to pray and meditate and pray the Rosary? 8. Greatly harming someone’s reputation. St. Ignatius of Loyola writes, “If I reveal a hidden mortal sin of another, I sin mortally. If I reveal a hidden venial sin, I sin venially; if his defect, I manifest my own.” That means that if I gossip that my neighbor committed adultery, it puts me in mortal sin, as I have revealed a hidden mortal sin. But key to this phrase is the word “hidden” because if you reveal, for example, that your mother no longer goes to Mass or your father left the Catholic Church, these are public mortal sins. Not that they should be talked about a lot, but discussing a public mortal sin, say of a politician, where it is not good practice for the Catholic, is not mortal sin. Another exception to this is intervention. For example, if your neighbor is sexually molesting his children, you are required to call the police. If your uncle is an alcoholic, you may need to have an intervention. It is not a sin to discuss these things, but it always must be for physical safety and eternal salvation of others. Also, be sure to avoid couching the gossip of mortal sins into prayer: “Yeah, that gal in our Bible Study really needs prayers because she keeps flirting with the priest.” Again, St. Ignatius of Loyola: “If I reveal a hidden mortal sin of another, I sin mortally.”
9. Missing Sunday Mass without good reason and/or unnecessary work on Sunday. Before Vatican II, both of these were tied together in all priest’s moral theology training. Now, I am absolutely shocked how many priests today admit that missing Sunday Mass is a mortal sin (good on those priests for admitting that) but deny my assertion that unnecessary work on Sunday is a mortal sin (an oversight that might land many priests in hell.) I do not have time to quote countless Popes on this one, so I will just give a quote from the patron of all priests, St. John Vianney, who saw people pushing their farming carts around on Sunday. He said, “I see them pushing their carts and I see them pushing them into hell.” Could we not say that at a Wal-Mart on Sunday? “I see them pushing their carts, and I see them pushing them into hell.” Again, a caveat is in order. There is necessary work on Sunday. For example, the medical field requires workers on Sunday: “Is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do harm, to save life or to kill?”—Mark 3:4. Or, if you have a big feast for your family on Sunday, of course it may be necessary to do a couple hours of clean up. Also excepted is charity work: cleaning up your Church, or working at a soup kitchen. These are not only permitted, but even encouraged on Sundays. But all in all, we should work on Saturdays like Jews work on Fridays to get everything done. I can already hear a lot of priests reading this blog post and their response to me: “But under the new law we are free in Jesus Christ so why compare us to Old Testament Jews and the Sabbath?” My answer: “Precisely so

There are various ways that mathematics has been claimed to be able to make you rich and famous and I thought that it would be good to dispose of some of these as quickly as possible. One of the questions that I am frequently asked when people find out that I’m a professional mathematician (apart from ’when will you leave?’) is ’how can I choose my numbers for the National Lottery to maximisemy chances of winning?’. Unfortunately mathematics is of no great use here as all combinations of numbers are equally likely (or unlikely) to win (a fact not well appreciated by the general public).
The same conclusion, by and large, applies to any form of gambling. The invention of the branch of mathematics now called probability was motivated, in part, by attempts to understand gambling. However, in the long term, all gambling will lead to a loss of hard-earned cash (as the people who own casinos understand probability as well and can adjust the various games so that the odds are intheir favour).
A final way not to become rich and famous with mathematics is to win a Nobel prize.There is no Nobel prize in mathematics. Faced with the depressing conclusions of the previous section we have to ask ourselves whether mathematics can ever make us rich and famous. Fortunately (for the reader) the answer to this question is yes. One way is to work for a bank. There is a new branch of mathematics called financial mathematics which looks at questions like the right price to set for an option (a right tobuy shares on the stock market). Mathematicians able to work in this field are in high demand, but have to understand the complexities of tricky subjects such as stochastic differential equations.
Another way to become rich and famous is to devise, or break a code. Nearly all modern codes are based upon ideas from pure mathematics (number theory to be precise). Codes are incredibly important to nearly all aspects of modern life, including transactions between you and your bank (if you have a bank account) and any time that you send ’secret’ information (such as a credit card number)over the Internet. Most of them rely for their security on the current belief that it is very hard to find the prime factors of a large number. (Later on we shall find out exactly how hard this is.) If you can find a quick way to factorise a large number quickly, then fame and fortune (possibly obtained illegally) are yours for the taking. (It may however be easier to rob a bank direct, althoughthere is a possibility that a quantum computer will do it for us.)

As you will probably have noticed, we are now not only at the start of a new century, but also at the start of a new millennium. It was felt appropriate by many mathematicians the 21st century should start off with a series of unsolved problems in mathematics. There were several groups that proposed different lists of problems ranging from the very applied to the very pure. It is not difficultto pose a problem in mathematics which is hard to solve. Indeed most nonlinear differential equations have no known exact solution, nor can we see how any such equation ever could have an exact solution. Similar technical problems arise in all fields of mathematics.
However, these are not in a sense good problems. A good problem is one which is not just hard in its own right, but the solution of which, or even the attempts at a solution of which, will generate a lot of new mathematics in the process and which will lead to the solution of problems in areas of mathematics far distant from those in which the problem was originally posed. This is amuch harder test of a good problem.
In the end, out of the vast range of possible problems, a list of seven Millennium Prize Problems problems emerged. These were posed by an organisation called the Clay Institute which is based in Cambridge, Massachusetts. As I said in the introduction $1,000,000 is out there to be won. To win this prize you must either solve a problem or produce acounterexample and (here’s the catch) your solution must stand the rigours of inspection by all of the world’s mathematicians for at least two years!

There is also an excellent book by Keith Devlin, ’The Millennium Problems’, which goes into detail not only on each problem but also on the various teams of mathematicians around the world who aretrying to solve them.
Roughly speaking, problems 4 and 7 are in number theory, 2 and 3 are in topology, 1 is in optimisation and 5 and 6 are problems about differential equations. It is dangerous to say that any one mathematical problem is more applied than any other (and even more dangerous to say which is more important), however I think it is fair to say that the solution of problems 1 and 7 will have immediatepractical importance, whilst the application of the others lies further in the future.
We will now look in more detail at Problem 1.Problem 1: P versus NP
Please forgive the rather dry title to this section as the problems that it lead to are fascinating, relevant, important and (in keeping with the title of this article) potentially the source of great riches. The P versus NP problem is all about how easy it is to solve problems, so it is a problem about problems. Put another way, this problem relates to the question of whether acomputer can ever replace a mathematician, ie. will I (and perhaps you!) have a job in a few years time.The party problem
To motivate this question we will look a little ahead, into the future of those readers who are still at school, and endeavour to give a bit of advice to those going up to university. When you go to university certain rather unimportant things will occupy your time, such as the need to study, feed yourself and look for a job. These are all distractions in the pursuit of the most importantstudent activity, namely that of going to parties. Imagine now that you are in your first week at university, and to celebrate having survived for a whole week you decide to throw a (wild) party. In this first week you have made a grand total of five friends, named (conveniently for a mathematician) Angela, Brian, Colin, Daphne and Edward. Sadly you live in rather cramped universityaccommodation, and your room can only hold a (fun-filled) party of three. The first week at university has already been quite eventful. A and B have gone out, have split up and B is now going out with D. As a consequence A and will not come to the party if B or D are there. C used to be going out with D and will not go to the party if she is there. D beat E in the first week test, and E will alsonot go if D is there.
So, the question that you are faced with is which three friends can you invite to the party so that all are compatible with each other? In this case it doesn’t take very long to see that you can safely invite Angela, Colin and Edward to have an ACE party.
Now let’s move a few years on to the end of your final year at university. You plan now to have a (mega) party to celebrate your departure (complete with refreshments and a band). You have been very socially active during your university career and now have 200 friends (who said that maths wasn’t fun?). You are also a bit more organised and decide to hire the Student Union building to holdyour party in. This metropolis will hold 100 people. Sadly, however, the love lives of your friends have been varied and complex and you have a long list which tells you which of your friends cannot possibly come to the party together (at least if the union building is to survive the experience).

The question is who do you invite? Fortunately your university mathematics course has included a module on computing and you decide to try to solve this problem on a computer. At this stage I invite (educated) guesses from the gentle reader as to how long it will take your computer to come up with the party list. Did I hear a minute from the reader on the right? Who was that who said 10seconds? Would anyone be prepared to wait for an hour?
Solving the party problemLet’s now look at a simple strategy with two parts for solving this problem.Part A: Get the computer to select a random set of 100 people from your list of 200 friends.Part B: Check this selection against your list to see if there are any incompatible friends. If the selection is OK then you have a party. If not, go back to Part A.
We now have to ask how long it will take our computer to implement this strategy. Suppose that we have a possible party chosen in Part A. To check this party we need to go through the list in Part B. This operation takes a time proportional to the number of possible pairings of friends at the party. You go through each possible pair and see whether it is on the list.Your possible party has 100 people and there are a possible items to check. Thus Part B will take 4950 times the time it takes the computer to do one operation. On a fast computer each operation might be around 1ns (a nanosecond is seconds), so Part B takes 4590ns=4.59s (a microsecond is seconds); ie. it is almost instantaneous.
Now let’s look at the time it takes to do Part A. To implement the algorithm, the computer has to check out every possible party. Given that there are 200 possible people and 100 need to be chosen, the number of possible parties is given by , where

So what are we to do? Well, one solution is to deep-freeze the computer programmer until the computer comes up with the answer. Of course by this time your friends may have got a bit bored with waiting. The alternative strategy is to find a better way of programming the computer (or, in maths speak, to find a better algorithm). However, it is very far from obvious what sort of algorithmthis should be.
Let’s have a closer look at the difficulty of this problem. Suppose that we have friends and we want to invite half of them to the party, so that or . The number of possible pairs of enemies among your friends cannot be more than the total possible number of pairs which is This is the maximum total length of the list of pairs of enemies. Also, in your list of attendees at the party there are different pairs. To check your party you must check each one of these pairs against the master list, which takes operations. Thus the time it takes to check a party is (at worst) proportional to .
We say that the time of this checking process is polynomial in n, or takes polynomial time. Polynomial time means that the checking time is always bounded by some power of n.
Anything which can be done in polynomial time is (essentially) doable on a computer. If a problem can be solved in polynomial time then we say it is of type P, and is in a sense easy. An example of an easy problem is that of sorting a list of numbers into increasing order. Although the total number of different ways of arranging numbers is , you can put them into order in a time proportional to (which is even smaller than ). Rapid algorithms for sorting lists lie at the heart of data-bases.Is the party problem an easy problem?Let’s look at how many different parties there are which half of your friends can attend. A good approximation to can be found by using Stirling’s formula for and is given by This formula allows us to quickly estimate the size of task A. For even moderate values of this number is huge. The number of parties grows faster than any polynomial function of r. Indeed it is an exponential function of r. The time that it takes to check out this number of parties that we need to check is not polynomial in r, but grows exponentially with r. We call such problems N. N problems are hard to solve.
The party problem is a bit special. Although it takes N-time to generate all of the parties, it only takes P-time to check each one. This type of problem is called NP (hence the name of the problem in this section).
The procedure that we have identified for solving the party problem takes far more than polynomial time. Thus the problem appears to be hard. Of course, we may not have come up with an especially efficient algorithm for solving the party problem. For example, one way to sort a list of length n is to try every one of the n! possible lists and to see which one is in order.This method is very slow indeed, much slower than the nln(n ) operations that the quick-sort algorithm takes.
The million dollar question (quite literally) is whether we are forced to always use a slow algorithm for the party problem, or whether we can find a perfect party using a computer algorithm which takes polynomial time. If this is the case then we could say (for the party problem) thatP = NP.The problem is that noone has ever found such an algorithm nor has it has even been proven for certain that such an algorithm cannot exist.The immensity of our task is this. To show that a problem is of type P you must find a polynomial time algorithm, however, to show that it is not-P you must check all possible algorithms and show that none of them work in polynomial time.Why do we care about P versus NP?If this were just a question about parties, it wouldn’t have made it into anyone’s list of top problems for the new millennium. However, there are many, many problems which are very like the party problem, in that they take P operations to check, but there are N possibilities to go through. We call all such problems NP problems. The remarkable thing is that it has been proventhat there is a large set of NP problems which have the property that if you can solve one in polynomial time then you can solve all such problems in polynomial time. This is called the set of NP complete problems. Crack one and you crack them all. It is the all-encompassing nature of this result which makes the P versus NP question such an importantproblem.
Here are some of the variety of problems which are NP:
*The knapsack problem: fitting a set of oddly shaped items into a knapsack (closely related to the question of placing components on a circuit board).
*The time-tabling problem : constructing a working timetable for a school so that teachers and students are never in two places at once (a similar problem arises in placing pilots in an airline).
*Solving the minesweeper game that you have on your computer.
*Colouring a map with four colours, so that no two adjacent regions have the same colour.
*Factorising large numbers.
As we hinted earlier, the last of these problems lies at the heart of modern cryptography for which the security of a code relies on the difficulty of finding the factors of a number. You can find out why in The code book by Simon Singh, and there is more about cryptography in Safety in numbers from Issue 21 of Plus.
Briefly, modern codes (based on the RSA cipher) start with a pair of large prime numbers p1 and p2 and multiply them together to give a product m=p1p2. The number m is released to the public, but p1 and p2 are kept secret. To crack the code you have to findp1 and p2, given the value of m. Now m is usually a very large number, maybe m has n decimal digits where n may be around 100. To find the factors of m one simple technique would be to check each of the numbers less than the square root of m to see whether it divides into m. Given any number, checking thatit divides into m is easy and takes a number of operations proportional to at most n2 (you can check this for yourself). Klein won just shy of $2,500,000 and then made even bigger waves, as he donated the entire payout to charity. After not playing in last year’s Super High Roller Bowl, Klein will return in 2017.
Bill Perkins – The man that is changing the Twitch game one stream at a time is also one of the first non-professional players to dive head first into the High Roller world. The hedge fund manager has made a name for himself in the poker world as one of the community’s biggest prop betters, but his poker resume is nothing to scoff at either. He recorded a nearly $2,000,000 score for a podium finish in the $111,1111 One Drop High Roller at the 2013 WSOP and Perkins will have another shot at a massive result this summer.
Bobby Baldwin – While this list of players is mostly segregated between professionals and non-pros, Bobby Baldwin satisfies both requirements. “The Owl” is a four-time WSOP bracelet winner, who is best known for winning the 1978 WSOP Main Event. For the last few decades though, Baldwin has spent his time becoming one of the most influential and successful casino executives in Las Vegas. Baldwin will be making another return to the high stakes arena, after participating in both the 2015 and 2016 versions of the Super High Roller Bowl.
Cary Katz – As one of only two players that ever cashed the $1 million buy-in The Big One for One Drop twice, Cary Katz is one of the more respected non-professionals that competes at the High Roller level. This was evident last year, as Katz amassed 15 cashes for over $3,000,000 in ARIA High Roller earnings to be the most successful player through that series in 2016. Katz then opened the year with another ARIA win, meaning he’s hoping to keep his recent run going until this summer’s Super High Roller Bowl.
Daniel Colman – Fresh off his HK$250,000 Triton Super High Roller Series victory, Daniel Colman will have another attempt to reach the top of the poker world this summer. Colman did just that in 2014, when he won the $1,000,000 The Big one for One Drop for $15,300,000. Since, Colman has pushed himself into the top-four on poker’s all-time money list and has solidified himself as one of the best No Limit tournament players on the planet.
Dan Shak – Much like the previously mentioned Perkins, Dan Shak was one of the first semi-professional players to compete at the highest level. Shak was also one of the first to do so at that level, as he’s finished as the runner-up twice in $100,000 buy-in Super High Rollers at the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure. He’s also won a $100,000 buy-in event in Australia and is coming off a cash in last year’s Super High Roller Bowl. Only one player has been able to cash twice, Erik Seidel, but Shak will try to change that this year.
Dan Smith – Last year, Dan Smith, pictured below, might have bubbled the Super High Roller Bowl but he then went on to notch podium finishes in some of the summer’s biggest WSOP events. Smith finished 3rd in a $25,000 Pot Limit Omaha event and then scored another bronze medal in the $111,111 High Roller for One Drop. Smith then ended 2016 by raising $1,700,000 for charity and opened this year with an ARIA High Roller win. Smith will return to the Super High Roller Bowl this summer.
Daniel Negreanu – While he has been unable to find his way into the money during the last two Super High Roller Bowls, Daniel Negreanu is one of poker’s biggest names and best players. “Kid Poker” has had success across the globe and with $32,000,000 in career earnings, is poker’s leading money earner. Throw in six WSOP bracelets, two WPT titles and one of the largest fan bases the game has ever seen and the Poker Central Ambassador will be a player to watch as he goes for his first career Super High Roller Bowl cash.
Dan Perper – With results from tournaments of varying buy-ins, from $500 events to $100,000 buy-in events, Dan Perper has had success at nearly every level of tournament poker. His biggest scores have come in Super High Rollers though, after Perper finished 4th in a $100,000 event in 2012 and then 5th in the 2015 version of the $111,111 buy-in One Drop High Roller at the WSOP. While he may not get the time to play as much poker as he’d like, the investment firm partner clearly makes his High Roller action count and will look to do the same this summer.

Giuseppe Iadisernia – Not much is known about Venezuela’s Giuseppe Iadisernia. The Italian-born business man has only one career tournament score, from the 2011 WSOP Main Event, but a quick Google search shows that he’s been involved in the horse racing and training business for the better part of the last decade. Needless to say, Iadisernia may be the dark horse of this year’s Super High Roller Bowl.
Jason Koon – Each year, there are plenty of High Roller tournaments but there are only select events that get Super High Roller billing. Jason Koon opened the year with a victory in the first ever PokerStars Championship Bahamas $100,000 Super High Roller. That win was good for a $1,600,000 score and it came just a few months after Koon recorded another seven-figure results at the SHRPO Championship. One of poker’s hottest players will not be missing out on poker’s biggest event.
Jason Mercier – Both the reigning GPI Player of the Year, David Peters, and the reigning WSOP Player of the Year, Jason Mercier, will be back in 2017. Mercier had potentially the best summer in recent memory last year, when he won two WSOP bracelets and made four final tables. Outside of his WSOP success, Mercier has crushed High Rollers around the world and he’ll hope to record his first Super High Roller Bowl score this summer.
John Morgan – Non-professionals have fared well in ARIA High Roller events throughout the last few years and businessman John Morgan was one of the first do so. A victory in a 2015 High Roller announced Morgan to the High Roller world and ever since, Morgan has proven his worth at every level of the poker hierarchy. The Minnesota native has over 125 career tournament results, including nearly 20 outright wins. While the Super High Roller Bowl may be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to play at the highest level for some players, it’s probably just another weekend for the fearless Morgan. An experienced regular in some of Las Vegas’ biggest cash games and tournaments, Morgan will be returning to the Super High Roller Bowl in 2017.
Justin Bonomo – Thanks to a stellar summer, that saw him record two runner-up finishes and two 3rd place results at the WSOP, 2016 was Justin Bonomo’s best year as a professional. That’s tough to do after such a storied career. Then after a storied summer, Bonomo kept the run up with a final table appearance at the WPT Bellagio Five Diamond Poker Classic and another runner-up finish in an ARIA $100K Super High Roller. The Bravo Poker 2019 TDA Summit IX was held June 28-29 at the beautiful Aria Resort and Casino, Las Vegas. Aria “Poker Boss” Sean McCormack and Tournament Director Paul Campbell made certain that attendees enjoyed the best convention space along with luxurious accommodation and great entertainment. This was the 3rd TDA Summit to be hosted by Aria.
After two days of intense deliberations, the Association approved 1 new rule (player identity), significant edits to 11 rules and minor clarifications to 10 others. 4 new recommended procedures were approved along with edits to 2 procedures. One topic was changed from a rule to a recommended procedure (number of players at the final table). Several new examples were added to the Illustration Addendum where appropriate.Torneo Poker Slovenia 2019 World Cup
TDA Summit IX was presented by Genesis Gaming, developers of the industry-leading Bravo Poker Room Management System, Bravo Poker Live, and Bravo Pit Management System. On Friday night attendees took a break and socialized over the members-only tournament in the PokerGO Studio courtesy of Faded Spade Playing Cards.

Things kicked off with a bang on Wednesday, March 27, with Event #1 $365 No-Limit Hold’em Re-Entry, which attracted 800 entries and created a prize pool of $240,560. Only 125 players survived the various starting flights, with 25-year-old Zachary Donovan holding the chip lead heading into Day 2. Donovan, who has nearly $1 million in online poker winnings, and who recently relocated to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, used that big stack not only to plow through the money bubble at 81 players, but also to navigate to the final table.
The event was scheduled to finish on Day 2, but an impromptu third day had to be added to the schedule. Six players advanced to Day 3, with Donovan holding 3,050,000 in chips, Sam Taylor with 2,134,000, and the other four each under a million. As one could expect, the big stacks prevailed with Donovan and Taylor advancing to a heads up battle that lasted about two hours. In what would be the last hand of the tournament, Taylor got all in with and was racing against the of Donovan. An ace on the flop looked good to Taylor, but when a four turned, it was all over. From there, Daniel Chan of New York defeated Ralph Massey to win $48,521 in Event #2 $1,125 No-Limit Hold’em, which attracted 179 players and created a prize pool of $179,707, and Brian Scholl topped a field of 143 players to take down Event #3 $365 Limit Omaha Eight or Better for $12,040.
Angelo Didio captured a ring and a $25,668 first-place prize in Event #4 $365 No-Limit Hold’em, which had 388 players and a $116,671 prize pool. Event #5 $365 No-Limit Hold’em, which had 359 entries and a $107,951 prize pool, belonged to Glen Minxolli of Peabody, Massachusetts. Minxolli defeated Parveen Kapoor in heads-up play to win $24,829 and his gold ring.
Perhaps the most exciting event of the stop thus far was Event #6 $580 No-Limit Hold’em, which saw 212 players take their shot at the title and create a $106,933 prize pool. Poker pro Roland Israelashvili ended up bubbling the final table by finishing in tenth place for $1,999, but a couple of well-known pros managed to squeeze into the top nine. One of those pros is Jamie Kerstetter, who was recently featured in PokerNews’ popular Online Chat series. Unfortunately for Kerstetter, she missed out on her first ring and had to settle for sixth place.

Arkadiy Tsinis is the other pro to make it to the final table. You may recall his bracelet and $540,136 in Event #38 $1,500 No-Limit Hold’em at the 2011 WSOP. Things managed to go Tsinis’ way at the final table and the financial analyst turned poker pro added a gold ring to his collection of WSOP jewelry. Whoever captures that title, along with the eventual winner of the Main Event, will automatically qualify for the National Championship this May in New Orleans. Playing poker is something that millions around the world love, and it has become a part of the lives of many. The makeup of poker’s dead man’s hand has varied through the years. Currently, it is described as a two-pairpoker hand consisting of the black aces and black eights. The pair of aces and eights, along with an unknown hole card, were reportedly held by Old Westfolk hero, lawman, and gunfighterWild Bill Hickok when he was murdered while playing a game. No contemporaneous source, however, records the exact cards he held when killed. Author Frank Wilstach’s 1926 book, Wild Bill Hickok: The Prince of Pistoleers, led to the popular modern held conception of the poker hand’s contents.Use of the phrase[edit]
The expression ’dead man’s hand’ appears to have had some currency in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, although no one connected it to Hickok until the 1920s.[1][2] The earliest detailed reference to it was 1886, where it was described as a ’full house consisting of three jacks and a pair of tens.’[3] Jacks and sevens are called the dead man’s hand in the 1903 Encyclopaedia of Superstitions, Folklore, and the Occult Sciences.[4] The 1907 edition of Hoyle’s Games refers to the hand as Jacks and eights. What is currently considered the dead man’s hand card combination received its notoriety from a legend that it was the five-card stud or five-card draw hand, held by James Butler Hickok (better known as ’Wild Bill’ Hickok) when he was shot in the back of the head by Jack McCall on August 2, 1876, in Nuttal & Mann’s Saloon at Deadwood, Dakota Territory. Hickok’s final hand purportedly included the aces and eights of both black suits.[6]
According to a book by Western historian Carl W. Breihan, the cards were retrieved from the floor by a man named Neil Christy, who then passed them on to his son. The son, in turn, told Mr. Breihan of the composition of the hand. ’Here is an exact identity of these cards as told to me by Christy’s son: the ace of diamonds with a heel mark on it; the ace of clubs; the two black eights, clubs and spades, and the queen of hearts with a small drop of Hickok’s blood on it,’[7] though nothing of the sort was reported at the time immediately following the shooting.
Hickok biographer Joseph Rosa wrote about the make-up of the hand: ’The accepted version is that the cards were the ace of spades, the ace of clubs, two black eights, and the queen of clubs as the ’kicker’.’[8] Rosa, however, said that no contemporaneous source can be found for this exact hand.[9] The solidification in gamers’ parlance of the dead man’s hand as two pairs, black aces and eights, did not come about until after the 1926 publication of Wilstach’s book 50 years after Hickok’s death.[1]Legacy[edit]
